Beautiful Industry, 2024
Oil on canvas
21" x 29"
54cm x 73cm
$1522
I drove by this industrial park in La Havre, France one morning and was struck by the beauty of the grey smog against the colorful sunrise. I may be the only person in the world that finds industrial parks beautiful. I questioned why I would paint something like that. No one will want to hang this in their home. But the desire to paint it overroad any reservations I had. Last night we invited a new acquaintance over for dinner. I had returned this painting to my easel after letting it sit for a year in storage. I wanted to make some changes. I felt I had gone too abstract with it and wanted to bring it back to a more realistic state. Happy with the results I left it on my easel to dry. When our guest saw it, he told me that his father built that industrial park. We were stunned! What are the odds of this happening? I am becoming more convinced that art might be more than just a pretty picture. It has a mysterious spiritual component. It can reveal a deeper intelligence that exists beyond what we can see with our eyes.
Art can provide a sanctuary from the chaos and stress of our daily lived experiences, and it can help us to face and make meaning of the struggles that we face.

The Flamingos of Camargue, 2024
Oil on canvas
20" x 20"
50cm x 50cm
$1000
One of the most beautiful places I have been in my life is the Camargue National Reserve in Provence. The wildlife is abundant and situated in the most picturesque landscape which is perfect for nature photographers. I went to appease my photographer friend, but found myself shooting just as many photos as him. As the sun set, I had acquired a lifetime of subject matter for future paintings. This particular painting started out true to the photo with the 4 flamingos in the middle ground. I kept feeling like something was missing. It was difficult to make additions because I was so in love with the original composition. Yielding to my nagging gut, I added a flamingo to the foreground. I didn't like it at first. This addition felt so forced and comical. It had changed the whole feel of the painting. I started to question myself as an artist. Why can't I ever be sure of what I am doing? A few days later my friend walked by my easel and said, "It is good you added the flamingo in front." I burst out laughing.
"We will never know a works true meaning. There are forces at work beyond our comprehension. Let's make art and let others make the stories. We are dealing in a magic realm. Nobody knows why or how it works." Rick Rubin

I liked the feeling this gathering of people gave me. They seemed so relaxed around each other. At first I painted this with bushes behind them referencing the photo, but then I decided to put them in the water. I added boats because I like to have things coming into and out of the picture plane. At the end I changed the color of the skin on the woman on the right. I didn't change the skin color to be politically correct. I changed it because the painting was more visually interesting that way. In a painting as in life, beauty occurs when there is diversity.
Art can provide a sanctuary from the chaos and stress of our daily lived experiences, and it can help us to face and make meaning of the struggles that we face.

Recently the thought came to me that the view from this window may in fact be my favorite thing in the world. I love this view so much that if someone offered me a larger apartment for less money chances are I wouldn’t take it. Every day something new appears. Right at this moment a peniche (a large barge) is slowly making its way up the river. The river produces more inspiration than I can gather in a lifetime. This little sailboat is just one example of the abundant life on this part of the Seine River. The fact that the boat is docked with a full sail made me wonder what it is waiting for. Where is it's sailor? Is the sailboat excited about its pending adventure?

I was in Vallon-Pont-d'Arc, France and spotted two girls taking a dip in the Ardeche river. They were so beautiful in their Indian sarees. I came closer to take a photo of them. They were taking photos of each other for social media. It was perfect for me because they were posing so nicely. Afterward I introduced myself and showed them the photos I took. They asked me to take more photos of them. I had a free modeling session! They were lovely girls. After making this painting, I thought that it reminded me of a baptism. Often I have no idea why I am painting something and then at the end the meaning becomes clear. A Baptism can signify many things and may not necessarily be religious.
Art can evoke strong emotions and personal connections in people. Art can remind you of special moments in your life, or it can be a source of comfort during difficult times.
